Mr. Marcus Gilmer (Gil) Smith, Jr., age 81, of 1404 S. Dee Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center, Clifton Forge.

He was the husband of Ruth Jordan Smith.

Mr. Smith was born August 9, 1933 in Springwood, VA, the son of the late Marcus and Ona Ferguson Smith.

He graduated from Covington High School and served in the United States Air Force for four years.

Gil retired from Westvaco after thirty-six years of service.

He was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Chancel Choir.

In addition to his wife, Ruth Jordan Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Marc Smith of Covington and Randy Smith of Roanoke; an adopted son, Willard Meeks of Wilmington, NC; two grandchildren, Sara Smith of Covington and Austin Smith of Dublin; three brothers, Bob Smith and wife, Helen, Steve Smith and Chris Smith and wife, Custer; and a sister, Jean Porterfield and husband, Ron.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

A private service will be held at a later date.
