World War II Veteran Was Retired Railroad Engineer

Mr. Irl Franklin Smith, age 94, of Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the Springs Nursing Home, Hot Springs.

He was the husband of Gladys Mae Plott Smith. Mr. Smith was born September 19, 1920 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Goin Bonner Smith and Lula Grace Landis Smith.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the European Theatre of Operations.

Irl was employed as an engineer by the C&O Railroad. He was a member of the League of Older Americans, the Retreads and the Harley Davidson Association.

Irl enjoyed playing music especially the guitar and harmonica, helping people, woodworking and being a mechanic.

Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Curtis L. Smith and wife, Jennie of Covington; two daughters, Irene S. Broce and husband, Hale of Covington, and Wanda S. Hepler and husband, Ralph of Covington; six grandchildren; a number of great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Gladys Mae Plott Smith, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by one grandson and four brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends attending the service. The family will receive their friends from 11:30 a.m. until service time at Loving Funeral Home and at the residence, 214 Mt. Pleasant Drive, Covington, at other times.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3959 Electric Road, Suite 357, Roanoke, VA 24018. Arrangements are being handled by Loving Funeral Home; www.lovingfuneralhome1913.com.
