Obituary for Louise Garland (Speedy) Carter Louise Garland (Speedy) Carter
Registered Nurse Was Known As "Speedy"; Was Gifted Athlete, World War II Nurse's Corps Member

Louise Garland (Speedy) Carter, 89, of 212 Third Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at her residence.

She was born in Clifton Forge on April 18, 1926, a daughter of the late Kenner Nathaniel Garland and Susie Dora Wright Garland.

She was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years, working for the former Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital in Clifton Forge and Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.

Mrs. Carter was a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church and a member of Circle #2 of the Presbyterian Women of the Church. She was active in the Clifton Forge Women's Club, the retired Nurses Association and the Clifton Forge High School Alumni Association.

"Speedy" served in the Army Cadet Nurse's Corps during World War II.

"Speedy" grew up a tomboy and was a gifted athlete. She played basketball for Clifton Forge High School and continued playing in a woman's independed league, even after she had a family.

She was known to many as a nurse and caregiver and spent many years working as a private duty nurse. She trained at the C/O Hospital School of Nursing, where she made many lifelong friends.

"Speedy" was a faithful member of the church and knew the Lord as her savior. She told everyone that she knew that Heaven was waiting and she would see her precious mother and her lifelong love, her husband Cecil.

She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Carter Gideons, Betty Lou Carter Greenway, and Angela Carter Persinger and Doug Persinger; a son, Michael Garland Carter; six grandchildren, Christopher Gideons, Adam Gideons, Erinn Gideons, Abra Greenway, Emili Greenway Klammer and Olivia Smith; 10 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by a number of close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil E. Carter' three brothers, Nat, Bobby and Billy Garland, and two sisters, Virginia Garland and Janie Garland Hoke.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. from the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with Rev. David Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

The family will receive friends any time at 212 Third Street, Clifton Forge, and from 10:30 a.m. until time of the service Saturday at Nicely Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Fisher, Doug Persinger, Mike Henson, Adam Gideons and Christopher Gideons.
