World War II Veteran Was Westvaco Paper Inspector, Farmer

Charles Thomas Harlow, Jr., age 89, of 1401 Concord Street, Selma, Virginia, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Lewis Gale Medical Center, Salem.

He was born March 29, 1926 in Alleghany County, Virginia, to the late Charles T. Harlow, Sr. and Viola Pearl May Harlow.

Charles served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, serving on B17s and B29s from 1944 to 1946.

He was a paper inspector for Westvaco, retiring after 25 years of service, and enjoyed farming with friends, Smith Ogden and Juan Ramirez.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Persinger Harlow in 2012; two brothers, James "Happy" Harlow and Ernest Harlow; four sisters, Marguerite Broughman, Alvis Boyd, Inez Dooley and Virginia Larman; and a son-in-law, Ronald Evans.

He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn H. Evans of Kannapolis, NC, and Wanda Harlow Simpson and husband, Glen Ray "Jack" Simpson of Clifton Forge; two sons, Charles Thomas "Chuck" Harlow III of Clifton Forge, and E. J. "Jack" Harlow and wife, MaryLouise of Rich Patch, Covington; two brothers, Harrison "Ham" Harlow and wife, Mary of Williamsburg, and Ronald Harlow and wife, Helen of Selma; four grandchildren, Charles Thomas "Chuck" Harlow IV of Selma, Jennifer Lee Simpson and fiance, Matt Smith of Clifton Forge, Joseph Ray "Joe" Simpson and fiancee, Haley Glover of Clifton Forge, and E. J. Harlow II of Rich Patch, Covington; numerous nieces and nephews; and all his caregivers to whom the family gives their appreciation.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Lee Dotson and Reverend Carl Reese officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at his residence, 1401 Concord Street, Selma.
