Obituary for Doris Hickman Lewis Doris Hickman Lewis
Clifton Forge Native Was Longtime Volunteer, Covington Baptist Church Member

Mrs. Doris Hickman Lewis, age 99, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015, at the Brian Center Nursing Care-Alleghany, Low Moor.

Mrs. Lewis was born February 6, 1916 in Clifton Forge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Lewis; parents, Claire and Edward Allen Hickman; stepmother, Pearl Hickman; and sisters, Louise H. Roadcap and Ruth H. Hatcher.

Doris is survived by one sister, Garnett H. Bryan of Covington and one brother, Allen Hickman of Clifton Forge; her daughter, Constance Lewis Smith and husband, Frederick E. Smith, Jr. of Midlothian; two grandsons, Lewis Gregory Smith of Charlotte, NC and Stephen Bradley Smith and wife, Kelly of Lafayette Hill, PA; great granddaughter, Beatrice Smith of Lafayette Hill, PA; six nieces, Carolyn Landis, Lois Brown, Betsy Caul and Wanda Callahan, of Covington and Debbie Marcusson and Bonnie Sue Yopp of Richmond; five nephews, Allen Hatcher, Jerry Burks, Buddy Burks of Covington, Buck Hatcher of South Chesterfield and David Hickman of Richmond; and many special friends.

Mrs. Lewis was employed by Ann Deacon Interior Decorating & Design and Jane Colby/Halamode Alleghany Apparel.

She was a longtime active member of the Covington Baptist Church. As a member of the Joy Sunday School Class, she delivered Meals-On-Wheels, and enjoyed celebrating birthdays each month at a nursing home.

Doris was a faithful Monday volunteer at Alleghany Regional Hospital and LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, logging 10,000 volunteer hours in thirty-two years. She was proud to be honored as volunteer of the year.

Mrs. Lewis was also a former member of the Covington Women's Club and Old Dominion Garden Club.

The family would like to thank Allen Hatcher, Lois Brown, and Carolyn Landis for their continual daily love and support over the years. We would also like to thank her wonderful friends as well as the members of the Covington Baptist Church, for their continued visits and support.

There will be a private burial conducted at Cedar Hill Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Covington Baptist Church by Rev. Ted Fuson with a visitation and reception to follow.
