Former Hercules Supervisor Was Veteran Of World War II

Charles Lester (Charlie) Conner, age 88 of 6113 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Friday, August 14, 2015 at his home.

He was born July 4, 1927 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Henry W. Conner, Sr. and Dorothy Hayslett Conner.

He was a supervisor at the former Hercules in Covington and also worked at Industrial Rayon and Stillwater, Inc.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army.

He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church, the CCM Bear Hunters Club, where he served as their chaplain.

Charlie loved the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carstilla Clark and her husband, Edward, Wanda Nicely and husband, Paul; two brothers, Marvin C. Conner and Wayne Conner.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cornelia Entisminger Conner; his sons, Fred Conner and his wife, Nettie, Delmas Conner and wife, Cherry; his daughter, Rhonda Haynes and husband, Frankie; a brother H.W. Conner, Jr. and wife, Kitty; a sister-in-law, Carol Conner; his grandchildren, Charlie Conner and wife, Tina, Yvonne Renee Clark and husband, Keith, Alanna May Conner, Laurel Brook Haynes and Caleb E. Haynes; great-grandchildren, Wyatt C. Wood, Cassie Conner and Gracie Conner; and a number of nieces and nephews. Also special friends and neighbors Bobby and Brenda Newcomb, Roger and Betty Daniel and Johnny and Betty Dean. His caregivers, Barbara Gum, Amanda Higgins, Debbie Brunfield, Mary Westbury and the staff of Mountain Regional Hospice.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home with the Reverend John Hodgen, Reverend Derek Gabbert, Reverend Edward Wold and Reverend Doug Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Clifton Forge VFW Post 4299.

The family received friends Sunday evening at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at their residence.

Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Charlie Conner, Wyatt Wood, Caleb Haynes, Keith Clark and CCM hunt club members, Stevie Nicely, Barry Daniel, Phillip Brooks and Timmy Puffenbarger. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Smith, Brandon Nicely, Glenn Clark, Dale Nicely, Greg Vess, Greg Linkeswiler, Lewis Clark, Bobby Newcomb, Jack Slough, Tommy Vess, Derek Clark and Ralph Tucker.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Sharon Baptist Church, c/o Mrs. Wesley Snead, Sr., 3107 Longdale Furnace Road, Clifton Forge, Va. 24422.
