Decorated Korean War Veteran Was MeadWestvaco Retiree, Good News Fellowship Church Member

Mr. John Clinton May, Jr., age 85, of Covington, Virginia, died Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at his residence.

He was the husband of the late Sylvia Slayton May and the late Cynthia Byer May.

Mr. May was born September 25, 1929 in Covington, the son of the late John Clinton May, Sr. and Dorothy Sheesley May.

Upon entering the United States Army in 1948, John served in the Korean War and was part of those who served at the Chosen Reservoir.

A highly decorated soldier, he was honored with several medals including two Bronze Stars for valor, a Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Campaign Stars, an Army of Occupation Medal, and an United Nations Service Medal.

Following his discharge, John became a First Sergeant in the Reserves.

Mr. May was also a member, past post commander, and past district vice commander of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also an aide to the National Commander and later a Commander and Chaplin of the Sixth District of Virginia. John also belonged to the American Legion Post 4, was a disabled veteran and member of the Sons of the Confederacy.

He was employed as a head bleach room operator with MeadWestvaco, retiring after forty-three years of service.

John attended Good News Fellowship Church.

Mr. May is survived by four sons, Roger Lee May, John Clinton May, III, Daniel Eugene May and Garland Dale May; one daughter, Jerry May Windsor; seventeen grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John Clinton May, Sr. and Dorothy Sheesley May and his wives, Sylvia Slayton May and Cynthia Byer May, Mr. May was preceded in death by a daughter, Belinda Gail May; a grandson, Terry Wayne May in 1978; a brother, Clyde Edward May; and four sisters, Arlene Pickett, Helen Stinnette, Opal Bennett and Virginia Jennings.

A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2015, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating, assisted by Elder Norman Thomas. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Military rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
