Longtime Chemist Worked With Reeves Brothers, Kinyo, And Volunteered On Local Boards, Commissions

Don Albert Armstrong of Buena Vista, Virginia, passed away Monday, September 7, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William Edward Armstrong Sr. and Verna Taliferro Armstrong, and brother, Dr. William Edward Armstrong, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Davisson Armstrong; son, John Davisson Armstrong and wife, Laurie of Buena Vista; daughter, Tracey Armstrong Ragsdale and husband, Duane of Richmond; and grandchildren, Edwin Harris Ragsdale II, Ali Patton Armstrong, Carrie Davisson Ragsdale, Waite Harrison Armstrong, and Graham Davisson Armstrong.

Born in Staunton, on February 19, 1936, he attended Staunton Military Academy and Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, University of Virginia, and Bridgewater College.

He began his career as a chemist for Reeves Brothers, Inc. in their Buena Vista plant. He later was transferred as a chemist at Grace Plant in Rutherfordton, N.C., where he also taught pharmacology at the Rutherford County Hospital School of Nursing.

Leaving Reeves, he became a chemist for Crawford Manufacturing Co. in Richmond. He returned to Reeves Brothers to become their chemical consultant in Porto, Portugal, after which he worked again at both Reeves plants and traveled as a consultant in Milan, Italy. He then became manager of both the Reeves Buena Vista and Spartanburg, S.C. facilities.

The last years of his career were spent as a plant manager for The Kinyo Co. of Tokyo, Japan at their Newport News plant.

He served on the board of directors of Central Fidelity Bank, Buena Vista, on the Buena Vista Planning Commission, and the Rockbridge County Community Services Board which he also chaired. He was a trustee of Southern Seminary College and both Junior and Senior Warden of Christ Episcopal Church, Buena Vista.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday September, 8, 2015 from 5 to 7 p.m. at his residence, 157 Ridge Ave, Buena Vista, VA.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 2246 Walnut Ave. Buena Vista, VA.

A private burial will be held at a later date at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 2246 Walnut Ave. Buena Vista, VA 24416 or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street Lexington, VA 24450.
