Longtime Nurse Was Active In Her Community

Jane Marian Livesay Hills, 93, of Lexington, Virginia, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015.

She was born in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, July 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Kenna W. and Marian Collins Livesay.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Stanley G. "Pat" Hills of New York, N.Y.

She grew up in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and Strasburg, Virginia, and was a registered nurse, and a graduate of Sibley Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Washington, D.C.

She and Pat met in Washington, D.C. during the war. In 1943 they married after which she lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. until he returned from duty in Italy and North Africa. They returned to Strasburg, Virginia, in 1948, moving to Lexington in 1954.

Jane was a talented, community-minded person. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist church, where she sang in the choir for many years and played the bells. In addition she sewed, knitted, quilted and played piano.

She was active in various clubs and was especially fond of her quilt group.

Jane was family focused and after her children were in school, she returned to nursing as a private duty nurse and then as an OR nurse at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, retiring in 1980.

She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Catrow (Donald), of Martinsburg, W.Va.; three daughters, Nancy Hagen, of Richmond, Va., Peggy Strauss, of Ashland, Va., Kathy Hills (Jack Hostetter), of Rockbridge County; one son, Bob Hills (Diane), of Kingsport Tenn; four grandchildren, Clarissa Hills Brown (Chad), of Kingsport, Tenn, Katie Hagen, of Asheboro, N.C., Patrick Hills (Lauren), of Roanoke, Va., Elisabeth Thompson(Chris), of Chesterfield, Va.; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Tippens officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association or Trinity United Methodist Church.
