Former Buena Vista 'Father Of The Year' Dies At Age 67

Fred William (Freddie) Catlett, 67, of Buena Vista, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 5, 2015 after suffering from COPD for six years.

Freddie was born on October 21, 1948 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital, the son of the late Cpl. Fred S. (Petie) and Arlene R. Catlett, grandson of the late Billy and Mae Rogers and Marvin and Annie Mae Staton.

He was a Parry McCluer High School graduate and a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping with his family and friends.

After being nominated by his oldest son, Freddie received the "Father of the Year" award from the Buena Vista Jaycees in 1982.

Surviving is his wife of 47 years, Barbara H. Catlett; two sons, Chris Catlett of Amherst, Va.; Eric Catlett and wife, Jennifer, of Lexington, Va.; one daughter, Marcie Carte and husband, Cory of Glasgow, Va.; six grandchildren, Hunter, Lily Catlett, Cassie, Maddie Carte, Landon and Jorja Catlett. He is also survived by one sister, Susan Reynolds and husband, Don of Roanoke, Va.; and children Don III and Kelly; cousins Brenda and Larry Coleman of Rockbridge County, and children, Lisa, Tracy and Tommy; special friends, Jerry, Mary Austin, Betsy and the late Aubrey Foster, Sammy and the late Tally Burnett; and many other friends.

Freddie's family and many friends will remember him with love and admiration. He will surely be missed but his kind, gentle legacy lives on in all the lives he touched throughout his life. He was a wonderful husband, Daddy, Papaw, Brother, and friend.

The family will receive friends at Bolling, Grose and Lotts Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2015 under the leadership of the Rev. Bryon LePere and Sonja Oliver at Bolling, Grose and Lotts as well.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Buena Vista Rescue Squad, Lexington Rescue Squad or the Rockbridge Area Hospice.
