Lexington Native Dies At Age 94

Lula Shoemaker Sorrels, 94, of Buena Vista, Virginia, was called home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, December 29, 2015, surrounded by her children.

Lula was born March 17, 1921, to the late Charlie Basil and Ruth Shaw Shoemaker in Lexington, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie V. Sorrels; a son, Thomas E. Sorrels; and two daughters-in-law, Sherry Sorrels and Joan Sorrels; an infant sister, Alice; and six brothers, Everette, John, Fred, Robert, Sonny, and Jackie.

She is survived by devoted nine children, Kenny (Katie), Roy, Rodney and Keith Sorrels of Buena Vista, Steve (Nina) of Roanoke, Pat (Dan) Troppoli and David (Kim) Sorrels of Lexington, Gaye (Mike) Carter of Fredericksburg, Ruth (Stover) Dalton of Salem; two daughters-in-law, Charlotte Sorrels and Linda Sorrels; two sisters, Mabel Friesen and Elizabeth Hartless; 20 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 2016, at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday January 2, 2016, at the Stone Church of the Brethren, in Buena Vista with the Rev. Sheldon Sorrels officiating. Interment will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to thank Rockbridge Area Hospice for their support throughout this difficult time.
