W&L University Retiree Was Former Lexington Fire Chief, Auctioneer

Charles Marvin Lewis Conner Sr., 74, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Charlie was born July 27, 1941 in Lexington.

Charles retired from Washington & Lee University and was a lifetime member of the Lexington Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief from 1975 to 1979.

He was also an auctioneer, handling many estate sales throughout Lexington and the Rockbridge County area.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Betty Southers Conner; children, Wanda Lynne Hall (Kenneth), Teresa "Sissy" Garrett (Richard), Charles "Chad" Marvin Lewis Conner Jr. (Karen), James A. "Alex" Conner (Melissa Huffman); five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 at Harrison Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Nix officiating. Burial will follow at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA, 10 Animal Place, Lexington, VA.
