Longtime Covington Area Hairdresser Was Granbery United Methodist Church Member

Mrs. Virginia Lee Earehart Spencer, age 92, of Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, January 21, 2016 at her residence.

She was the wife of the late Artie Theodore Lester Spencer.

Mrs. Spencer was born December 17, 1923, a daughter of the late Charles Houston Earehart and Juanita Andrews Earehart.

At sixteen years old she became a hairdresser and later owned and operated a hair salon in her own home for many years.

Virginia enjoyed being a caregiver to others, loved cooking, and spending time with her family. Most of all, she was known for having a very unique sense of humor.

Mrs. Spencer was a longtime member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church. Virginia was a member of the Curtis A. Smith Post #1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies of the Moose of the Covington Moose Lodge #610.

Mrs. Spencer is survived by two daughters, Donna S. Waddell and husband, Durwin of Covington and Patricia S. "Patty" Whitehead and husband, John of Hartsville, SC; seven grandchildren, Durwin E. "Sonny" Waddell, Jr. and wife, Carolyn, Christopher Scot Waddell and wife, Jill, Charles Houston Waddell and wife, Shannon, John Matthew Whitehead and wife, Kristin, Brian David Whitehead and wife, Erin, Adam Spencer Whitehead and Mary Beth Jerman and husband, Calvin; thirteen great-grandchildren, Preston Waddell, Austin Waddell, Nick Waddell, Sam Waddell, Emma Waddell, Grace Waddell, Kinley Waddell, Rivers Whitehead, Tucker Whitehead, Lillian Whitehead, Jameson Whitehead, Colton Malone, and Kaylee Malone; one great-great grandson, Spencer Waddell; one brother, Andy Earehart of Beckley, WV; two sisters, Betty Daniel of Beckley, WV and Juanita Hines of Rhome, TX; and a special friend, Nicole Broughman.

In addition to her parents, Charles Houston Earehart and Juanita Andrews Earehart, and her husband, Artie Theodore Lester Spencer, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by a son, Artie Gene Spencer in 2001; a daughter, JoAnn Spencer McFarland in 1987; four brothers, Dillard Earehart, Charlie Earehart, Bill Earehart, and Howard Earehart; and two sisters, Lyda Tingler and Norma Dakos.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m.. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Russell Urban officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Waddell, Scot Waddell, Charlie Waddell, Matthew Whitehead, Brian Whitehead, and Adam Whitehead.

The family will receive friends Tuesday morning from 11:30 a.m. until time of the service at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main St., Covington, VA 24426.
