Homemaker Was Bethel United Methodist Church Member

Jeressa Frances Simmons Thompson, age 91, of 280 Fork View Road, Eagle Rock, Virginia, died Sunday, January 24, 2016 at her residence.

She was born February 6, 1924 in Botetourt County, Virginia to the late Henry Clay and Annie Thomas Simmons.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed cooking and working outdoors.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A. Thompson, Sr. in 1987; two brothers, Aubrey Simmons and Everett Simmons; and three sisters, Geneva Patterson, India Kern and Bernice Rock.

She is survived by a son, Raymond A. "Doc" Thompson, Jr. and wife, Kathryn of Eagle Rock; a sister-in-law, Lourine Davis of Salem; two grandchildren, Michael P. Thompson and wife, Jeannie and Stacy A. Thompson Freeman and husband, Eric, all of Eagle Rock; three great grandchildren, Karleigh Paige Thompson, Maggie Rae Thompson and Conner Joseph Freeman; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Lavelle Custer of Fieldale.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Thompson's hospice nurse, Carolyn Snyder and her hospice aide, Kathleen Fridley, who gave her loving care during her 12 month illness.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Pastor John Godfrey officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Cemetery, Botetourt County.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
