Millboro Resident Was Rockbridge County Native, Army Veteran, Burlington Retiree

Albert Earl Nicely, 92, of Goshen, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 22, 2016, at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia.

He was born in Rockbridge County, the son of Sidney Wallace Nicely and Mary Lou Reed Nicely, on September 23, 1923.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ruby Gaylor, Frances Nicely, Cloetta Wood, Ollie Mae (Polly) Lightner; and the mother of his children, Allene Benson Owens.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Staton Nicely; and five children, Brenda Claytor (Bill) of Lexington, Gay Bradley (Tony) of Powell, Tenn., Allena (Lulu) Nicely of Lexington, Sandy Nicely (Vicki) of Lexington, and Ben Nicely (Mary Helen) of Fairfield; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and three brothers-in-law, Frank, Jerry and Albert Staton.

He loved volunteering, horses, working with youth groups and his church. He was a member of Ebenezer A.R.P. Church where he served as Elder, Deacon, Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and on many committees.

He was one of two surviving charter members of the Buffalo Trail Riders Club. He was a Life Member of Goshen First Aid Crew, Goshen Volunteer Fire Department and Goshen Lion's Club, serving as president of each organization.

He donated a portion of his farm and was instrumental in establishing Grace Bible Camp on Brattons Run and served on its board for many years. He was privileged to represent Virginia in the Bicentennial Wagon Train in 1976, and the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train in 1986.

He worked at the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard, served in the army, retired from Burlington Industries, and then ran the horse program at the Goshen Boy Scout Camp.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2016, at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Harris officiating. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2016, at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
