Clifton Forge Baptist Church Member Was Sports Lover, Scout Leader

Steven Michael (Mike) Griffith, age 69, of 321 Third Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.

He was born September 22, 1946 in Luray, Virginia, to the late Clyde Elmer and Martha Petefish Griffith.

He served in the United States Navy for four years, and was a retired insurance salesman for Monumental Life Insurance and TransAmerica Life Insurance companies.

He was a long standing member of Clifton Forge Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities including as Sunday School Superintendant and Deacon, as well as on almost every church committee.

He loved sports, especially tennis and basketball and played with a travel tennis team. He was a Dixie League softball coach and a scout leader.

His greatest asset was his love of people.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Mark Alan Keith.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Keith of Eagle Rock; two sisters, Martha Clydette Lobred and husband, Tom of Springfield, and Patti Spinner and husband, Hezekiah of Clifton Forge; two grandchildren, A. J. Keith and Morgan Keith, both of Eagle Rock; two nieces, Melissa Douty and Michael Wilkening and two nephews, Andrew Lobred and Peter Lobred, and their families; a great niece and six great nephews, Alexandra Coughlan, Cooper Paxton, Sean Lobred, Evan Lobred, Matthew Lobred, Nathan Lobred, and Tyler Lobred; and a number of special cousins and other family members from Luray. Also surviving is Donna Short Abbot and husband, Tyson, whose friendship to Mike and the rest of the family will be forever remembered and greatly appreciated.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Clifton Forge Baptist Church, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Nathan Smith officiating.

Following the service, his body will be cremated. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge and on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Clifton Forge Baptist Church.
