Obituary for Harold Garland (Grogan) McDonald Harold Garland (Grogan) McDonald
Grogan's Pub Owner Was World War II Member Of The Merchant Marines

Mr. Harold Garland (Grogan) McDonald, affectionately known to all his friends as "Grogan", 88, of 1925 Clark Avenue, Covington, Virginia, died Saturday morning, March 26, 2016 at The Golden Living Center in Buena Vista, VA.

He was born July 28, 1927, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Bernard Franklin and Helen Ruth Mowbray McDonald.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Wayne McDonald; two brothers, Earl Franklin McDonald and Leonard Avis McDonald; one sister, Helen Ruth McDonald Jones; one grandson, Adam Snyder; and recently, his faithful pup, Flip.

Mr. McDonald served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II and retired from Best Foods, Inc., Miami, FL. He embarked on a second career as the long-time proprietor of Grogan's Pub after his return to Covington until his final retirement in 2010.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandy McDonald Snyder (Tommy) of Covington and Rhonda McDonald Groom (Steve) of Tampa; four sons, Brian McDonald (Martha) of Weston, FL; Dennis McDonald (Karen) of Tampa, FL; Jeff McDonald (Lesli) of Oldsmar, FL; and Kevin McDonald, Miami, FL.

He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn McDonald Knighton; half-sister, Jeannette Taber, Tooele, UT; and half-brother, Jim Kountz of Capon Bridge, WV.

In addition, Grogan is survived by his niece, Kathy Haynes Tomlin, who was his primary caretaker during his illness; and a devoted nephew, Barry McDonald; his faithful friends and neighbors, Carolyn and John Tingler; and his best friends, Lois and Bill Flemming.

He will be missed by those he loved at D&J Family Restaurant, where he enjoyed many meals and delightful conversations.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Loving Funeral Home beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all those who have expressed words of comfort; held our hands, wiped our tears; shared our joy and our sorrow over the last few weeks when strength was in short supply.
