Obituary for Alma Snyder Knick Alma Snyder Knick
Former C&O Railroad Secretary Liked Water Color Painting; Was Longtime First Christian Church Member

Mrs. Alma Snyder Knick, 91, formerly of Clifton Forge, Virginia, died on April 25, 2016 at Beacon Place in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Alma was born on October 10, 1924 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, to the late Harry Jacob and Claudie Stone Snyder.

She was pre-deceased by her husband of fifty five years, Russell A. Knick.

Before moving to Greensboro in 2000, Mrs. Knick was a life-time member of sixty-three years at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Clifton Forge. During her membership at FCC, Alma served as President of the Christian Women's Fellowship, Deacon, Elder, Clerk and Secretary of the Church Board.

After graduation from Clifton Forge High School, Mrs. Knick graduated from Dunsmore Business College in Staunton, Virginia, in 1943. While pursuing her education, Alma had the fortune of riding the train to and from classes, a 120 mile round trip with six other classmates. This offered the classmates an opportunity to hear war stories from servicemen, also passengers on the train.

Alma pursued a secretarial career of forty years, which included thirty-four years with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, now CSX Railroad.

Among other civic organizations, Alma was a member of the Clifton Forge Womens' Club, charter member of the Disabled American's Veterans' Auxiliary, United Daughters of the Confederation, where she was a direct descendant granddaughter in the Julia Jackson Chapter.

One of her joys was membership in the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. Alma treasured providing her church sanctuary with fresh floral arrangements each Sunday morning. At age 76, Alma discovered another passion of water coloring and painting still life. After moving to Greensboro in 2001, Alma enjoyed water coloring with a group of church friends at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church each week.

Survivors include her daughter Jane Knick Lawrence and son-in-law, Ralph W. Lawrence of Greensboro; grandchildren, Melanie Lawrence Jackson and husband, Michael Jackson of Greensboro; R. Adam Lawrence and family of Jacksonville, FL. Great grandchildren are Nicholas W. Jackson, Alexander L. Lawrence and Caroline J. Lawrence and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her only sister, Bernice Snyder Clapsaddle in February 2011. She leaves behind a special friend of twelve years, Charles (Chuck) Bailey of Greensboro.

A memorial service will be held at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC, during late May.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor with Reverend Glenn Clements officiating. Entombment will immediately follow.

The family will receive friends at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge on Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, is handling arrangements.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Guilford Park Presbyterian, 2100 Fernwood Drive, Greensboro, NC 27408 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
