World War II Army Veteran Was Homestead Retiree

Jay Owens Gray Hiner, Sr., age 84, of 155 Mount Beulah Road (Glen Wilton), Eagle Rock, Virginia, died Friday, May 13, 2016 at his residence.

He was born August 26, 1931 in Mustoe, Virginia (Highland County) to the late Harry Tucker Hiner and Mary Harris Hiner.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, and was a retired electrician for The Homestead Resort.

He took great joy in woodworking and cabinet making.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Hinkle Hiner, Harry Hiner, Jr., Ray Hiner, Sam Hiner and Norman Hiner; and a step daughter, Jessica Shorter.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Rebecca Grady Hiner of Eagle Rock; a daughter, Joyce Woodson of Millboro; two sons, Jason Hiner and wife, Brenda, and Jay Hiner, Jr. and wife, Ruby, all of Hot Springs; a step son, Buddy Shorter and wife, Mary of Iron Gate; three sisters, Mary Alice McCook of Florida, Charlotte Vogel of Pennsylvania; and Leita Pearl Buzzard of Hot Springs; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, including special nephew, Michael Lester and wife, Kathy; and special friends, Donald Lee Altizer and Harold Defibaugh.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Donald Lee Altizer officiating.

Interment will follow in Iron Gate Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. The family will receive friends on Monday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
