Obituary for George Clyde Shumate George Clyde Shumate
Sawmill Owner Was Longtime Kerrs Creek Resident

George Clyde Shumate, 68, of Lexington, Virginia, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016.

George was born in Beckley, West Virginia, on February 21, 1948, to the late Virginia and John Shumate.

He graduated from the National Hardwood Lumber Association in Memphis, Tennessee in 1967.

After graduation, George worked for multiple lumber companies and purchased his own sawmill in 1985 in Kerrs Creek, Virginia.

In 2010, he retired to enjoy his love of cattle on his ranch outside of Casper, Wyoming and farm in Kerrs Creek, Virginia.

George married Patricia on June 28, 1968, and together, they had two children, Amy and Lisa. He had a great love for hunting and traveling.

George is survived by his wife of forty-seven years; daughter, Amy (Jeremy) and their children, Wayne, Austin and Mikalya of Buena Vista; another daughter, Lisa (Richard) and their son, Ty of Casper, Wyoming; brothers, John (Alisha) of Charlotte N.C., Harry of Beaver, West Virginia; Keith (Diana) of Beckley, West Virginia; a great-grandchild, Autumn.

The family received friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2016, at George and Patricia's home at 81 Tranquility Lane, Lexington. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2016 at Harrison Funeral Home followed by a private burial at George's farm.

Since George was a blue jeans man, Patty requests everyone to come dressed casual for all services.

Memorial donations may be made in George's name to the American Diabetes Association: 1701 North Beauregarde Street, Alexandria, Va. 22311.
