John Daniel Carter, Sr., age 88, of The Brian Center, Low Moor, Virginia, and formerly of 633 Thornton Avenue, Clifton Forge, died Monday, August 8, 2016 at LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany in Low Moor.

He was born on December 27, 1927 in Selma, Virginia, to the late Forrest Alonzo Carter and Lucy Jane Warlitner Carter.

He served in the United States Army in the Philippines during World War II.

He was a machinist for CSX Transportation, and loved to deer hunt.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Elizabeth Snead Carter; a son, Gene Carter; a step son, Charlie Myers; and seven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Susie Kern of Clifton Forge; a son, Danny Carter and wife, Julia of Clifton Forge; four sisters, Edith Graziano of Glen Burnie, MD, Evelyn Groves of Halethorpe, MD, Anna Reynolds of Covington, and Virginia Looney of Norton; a brother, Fred Carter and wife, Roymane of Selma; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Nathan Colwell officiating.

Graveside military rites will be conducted by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post 4299.

The Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
