C&O Nursing School Graduate Was Longtime Nurse Anesthetist At ARH For Over 40 Years

Katherine Collier (Kitty) Whitmore Mason, age 90, of Richmond, Virginia passed away Tuesday September 27, 2016 at Lakewood Manor Nursing Home in Richmond, Virginia.

She was born February 05, 1926 in Dendron, VA to the late Wesley Owen and Nannie Collier Whitmore.

She was a graduate of the C&O school of nursing and worked as a registered nurse for the C&O Hospital and then was a nurse anesthetist for Alleghany Regional Hospital for over 40 years.

She was a member of the Clifton Forge Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, and also Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond.

She was a member of the Chesapeake & Ohio Nurses Alumni Association and was a part of the Nurses Cadet Corps.

In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by her husband Gilbert Courtney "G.C" Mason Jr. and her son-in-law, Weldon Higgs Jr.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan Mason Higgs of Orlando Fl.; a sister, Ann Barlow of Goochland; two grandchildren, Christopher Higgs and wife, Laura of Orlando Fl. and Jeremy Higgs of Charleston S.C; three great grandchildren; Helaina, Indigo, and John Higgs and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2016 from the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge, with the Reverend Donna Sams officiating.

Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park in Low Moor.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home.
