Obituary for Marilyn Goenner Staley Marilyn Goenner Staley
Former Iron Gate Resident Dies At Age 89

Marilyn Goenner Staley, age 89, of Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Staunton, Virginia and formerly of Iron Gate, Virginia, died Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Brookdale Assisted Living Center.

Marilyn was born November 25, 1927 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Oliver Stonewall and Hulda Jacobs Goenner.

She was a secretary for the Homestead Resort and a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Clifton Forge, where she sang in the choir. She also played the piano for various churches.

She enjoyed serving as a volunteer for the Alleghany Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and many knew her as the familiar face behind the volunteer desk since 1991. She loved sewing and listening to music.

In addition to parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Paul Lewis Staley in 1991.

She is survived by two daughters, Sue Staley of Millboro, and Gail Nelson and husband, Ricky of Dayton; a son, Mark Staley and wife, Paula of Verona; a brother, Dr. Ronald Goenner of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Christopher Staley and J. P. Nelson; three great grandchildren, Amanda Brown, Emma Staley, and Garrett Staley; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend Lynn Wright officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.

Pallbearers will be selected from friends and family attending the service. The family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home.
