World War II Veteran Was VMI Graduate, CSX Retiree

Charles William (Red) Bragg Jr., 91, of Huntington, WV, died Sunday, January 1, 2017 at St. Mary_s Medical Center, Huntington.

He was born December 25, 1925 in Clifton Forge, Virginia, the son of the late Lyda W. Bragg and Charles William Bragg.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Ruth A. Bragg; daughters, Kelly A. Richardson and husband, Gary of St. Albans, WV, and Barbara J. Lesher and husband, Brad of Huntington, WV; sons, Dean W. Bragg and fiancee, Tracy LeMaster and her daughter, Gia of Columbus, OH, and K.C. Bragg and wife, Tammy of Old Hickory, TN.; granddaughters Alexandria F. Runyon and Molly E. Runyon, both of Huntington, WV; and grandsons, Joshua Meiners of South Charleston, WV, Kyle L. Bragg and Willem O. Bragg, both of Old Hickory, TN.

After graduating from Clifton Forge High School in 1943, C.W. worked for the C&O Railway at Quinwood, WV. He served with the 2nd Division of the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II and in Japan at Nagasaki and Sasebo after the war.

He was a 1950 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil engineering. He served with the United States Army Constabulary in Germany during the Cold War and retired from the CSX Railway System in 1986.

He was a member of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church and VFW Post 1064 in Huntington, WV.

He also worked for E.I. DuPont in Kinston, N.C. and Belle, WV, Geophysical Service Inc. in Stanley, N.D. and Virden, Manitoba, Canada, and Wiley E. Wilson, Consulting Engineers in Lynchburg.

Services in West Virginia will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Angela Gay Kinkead officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Additional services in Virginia will be conducted Saturday January 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Rev. W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Military rites will be conducted by members of the Burnside-Carpenter VFW Post 4299. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge.

The family suggests remembrances may be made to the general fund of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, 5747 E. Pea Ridge Road, Huntington, WV, 25705. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, WV and Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, are in charge of arrangements.
