World War II Veteran Was Former Westvaco Machine Tender, Calvary Christian Church Charter Member

Mr. Sidney Estal (Pap Pap) Oliver, Jr., age 93, of Covington, Virginia died Sunday, January 22, 2017, at LewisGale Hospital, Low Moor.

He was the husband of the late Sarah Lambert "Ginny" Oliver.

Mr. Oliver was born June 24, 1923 in Covington, the son of the late Sidney Estal Oliver, Sr. and Lucinda Elizabeth Sartain Oliver.

A lifetime member of this community, he served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the European Theatre of Operations.

Sidney had been employed as a machine tender by Westvaco, retiring with forty-three years of service.

Mr. Oliver was a charter member of Calvary Christian Church, where he served his church as a former elder, deacon and other capacities. He was a life member of the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Sidney enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening and working with Boy Scout Troop 9 for a number of years.

Mr. Oliver is survived by four children, Rena Oliver Claytor and husband, Rick of Fredericksburg, Sidney Thomas "Tom" Oliver of Clifton Forge, James M. Oliver and wife, Diane of Knoxville, TN and Roger D. Oliver and wife, Dixie of Natural Well; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and special friend and neighbor, Viola Cronin.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Linda Salyers Oliver in 2013 and a brother, Rayburn "Bud" Oliver.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2017, from the Chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Warren officiating. Interment will be following Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers will be Chris Oliver, Duane Oliver, Michael Oliver, Justis Beverly, Bruce Lowman, and Gary Waddell.

Friends may pay their respects at Loving Funeral Home during normal business hours and the family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Calvary Christian Church, 1303 S. Pond Avenue, Covington, VA 24426.
