Obituary for William Wade (Bill) Fitzgerald William Wade (Bill) Fitzgerald
U. S. Army Veteran, Was Covington School Principal, Guidance Counselor

Mr. William Wade (Bill) Fitzgerald, age 94, of Covington, Virginia died Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Brian Center Nursing Care and Rehabilitation, Low Moor.

He was the husband of Lawanda Lanum Fitzgerald.

Mr. Fitzgerald was born June 8, 1922 in Covington, the son of the late Herby Walton Fitzgerald, Sr. and Lottie Bradley Fitzgerald.

He was a graduate of Covington High School.

Bill served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany.

He attended University of Richmond from 1941 until 1943 before returning in 1946 and graduating with a degree in Liberal Arts. Bill received his Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of Virginia.

An educator and principal in the Covington School System, he was a principal at Rivermont Elementary School for twenty years, taught for ten years and was a guidance counselor at Covington High School.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a member of Covington Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for forty-six years and served his church as a deacon and business moderator.

Most important in his life were his faith and church, his family, and service to and relationships with people through his vocation and daily life. He particularly enjoyed music including ten years as a violinist with the Alleghany Orchestra.

He strived to be a good Christian, a good man and a good citizen.

In addition to his wife of sixty-two years, Lawanda Fitzgerald, Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by a son, Bradley W. Fitzgerald and wife, Susan of Roanoke; a daughter, Terry Fitzgerald of Fairfax; four grandchildren, Brandon Sellers, Kristin Sellers Lee, William Fitzgerald and John Fitzgerald; two great grandchildren, Sandy Lee and Madison Lee; a brother, Ernest P. Fitzgerald and wife, Helen Jean of Covington; a sister Peggy F. Johnson and husband, Cecil of Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by four brothers, Buell Wilson Fitzgerald, Lemuel Woodrow Fitzgerald, Sr., Herby Walton Fitzgerald, Jr. and Warren Ryland Fitzgerald.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2017 at Covington Baptist Church with Rev. J. Glenn Linthicum officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Sellers, William Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald, Robert P. Braden, Jr., Paul Johnson, Danny Johnson, Paul Linkenhoker and Lewis P. Leech. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Scott, Barry Marshall, Donald "Buzzy" Ross, Dwayne Broughman, Latane Brugh and Darrell Gleason.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Covington Baptist Church.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Ministry Action at Covington Baptist Church, P. O. Box 687, Covington, VA 24426 or to your favorite charity.
