Homemaker Was Clifton Forge Native

Violet Pearl Downey Balser, age 87 of 1322 Cherokee Trail, Covington, Virginia died Monday, February 13, 2017 at her residence.

She was born December 30, 1929 in Clifton Forge to the late Jasper Downey, Sr. and Minnie Pearl Bowling Downey.

She was a homemaker throughout her life, and loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was known as "Nanny".

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Balser, Jr. in 2004; a brother, Jasper Downey, Jr.; and three sisters, Frances Morris, Beatrice Unroe, and Maggie Dudding.

She is survived by her daughter, Christie Coffman and husband, Keith of Covington; her son, John Michael Balser and wife, Denise of Eden, NC; three grandchildren, Tasha Johnell Cantrell and husband, Derek, Brandon Michael Balser, and Matthew Lawrence Balser; two great grandchildren, Laken Marie Cantrell and Jace Ryan Cantrell; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special puppy, "Toby".

The family will visit with friends on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, during which time a few words of comfort will be offered by Ms. Tonya Jones.

There will be a private committal service held at a later date. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422 or to the Alleghany Humane Society, P. O. Box 60, Low Moor, VA 24457.
