Glasgow Homemaker Was Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Member

Martha Sue Wood Funkhouser, age 82, of 74 Running Bear Lane, Glasgow, Virginia died Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville.

She was born October 23, 1934 in Glen Wilton, Botetourt County, to the late Arthur Morton Wood and Marian Ella Honts Wood.

She was a homemaker throughout her life.

In addition to taking care of her family, she was a member of Mt Zion United Methodist Church in Glasgow, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School, and was a devout member of the United Methodist Women.

She also belonged to the D.A.R., the Doll Club, the F.O.P. Auxiliary, and sat on the Rockbridge County Schools Special Educational Advisory Board.

She was a graduate of Eagle Rock High School and remained lifelong friends with her classmates.

In her spare time, she made wedding cakes, was an unfailing caregiver to her friends, and enjoyed fooling with her cattle.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Edward Funkhouser of Glasgow; six sons, Eddie Funkhouser and wife, Vicky of Staunton, David Funkhouser and wife, Jane of Powhatan, Willy Funkhouser and wife, Kristie of Natural Bridge, Andy Funkhouser and wife, Stacey of Grottoes, Steve Funkhouser and wife, Kathy of Fairfield, and John Funkhouser of Glasgow; two special people that she thought of as her children, Steve Staton and Patty Hollins; two sisters, Antonia McCoy of Glen Wilton and Lucy Lomasney of Florida; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer, Chris, Dylan, Jason, Patrick, Erin, Heather, Rachel, Sophia, Abby, and Emma; four great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Adelyn, Brayden, and Tyler; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a special lifelong friend, Nancy Campbell.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Robert Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Wood Cemetery, Woodtown Road, Glen Wilton.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 1277 Broadcreek Church Road, Natural Bridge, VA 24578 or to the Rockbridge Area Occupational Center, 1913 Sycamore Ave, Buena Vista, VA 24416.
