Alleghany County Native Was Retired Teacher's Assistant

Geraldine Campbell Brookman, 86, of 4409 Potts Creek Road, Covington, Virginia, died Thursday March 30, 2017 in the Alleghany Health and Rehab in Clifton Forge.

Mrs. Brookman was born May 3, 1930 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late James Robert and Mae Young Campbell.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie O. Brookman, an infant son, a son-in-law, Paul Thurston Sr., a grandson, Paul Thurston Jr., and a brother, Ryland Campbell.

Geraldine was a retired teacher's assistant in the title 1 program at the former Boiling Springs Elementary School and was a member of the Alleghany County Retired Teachers Association.

She was a member of the Persinger Memorial United Methodist Church, where she started the youth program and was a counselor along with being the church treasurer for a number of years. She sang in the Potts Valley Singers and was part of the United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Odell W. Brookman of Covington; two daughters, Lois Thurston of Eagle Rock and Janice Rose and husband, Russell of Covington; three grandchildren, David Rose and wife, Connie, Janelle Caldwell and husband, Steve, and Andrew Thurston and wife, Brittany; four great grandchildren: Ashley Rose, Brandon Caldwell, Emma Thurston, and Cullen Thurston, two sisters, Christine Hepler and Ellen Hepler and husband, Freddie, both of Covington; two brothers, Robert Campbell and wife, Cathy of Covington; and James "Butch" Campbell and wife, Susie of Powder Springs, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. David Brown officiating.

The interment will follow in Lone Star Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Brookman's name to the Persinger Memorial United Methodist Church at 3505 Potts Creek Road, Covington, VA 24426.
