Dr. Unity Monger Powell, age 95, of Covington, Virginia, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at her residence.

She was the wife of the late M. Leon Powell.

Dr. Powell was born January 2, 1922 in Elkton, the daughter of the late Ralph Showalter Monger and Lillye Kaylor Monger.

Upon coming to his area in 1952 from Harrisonburg, she was the first woman doctor to practice in Covington and the surrounding community.

Dr Powell was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.

Dr. Powell is survived by a daughter, Dr. Peggy Powell Rollins and husband, David of Charleston, WV; an adopted daughter, Rev. Susan Carlson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Russell Urban officiating.

Viewing will occur at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be conducted at 1:00 p.m.. Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, VA.

The family suggests that memorial tributes be made to Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, 425 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426.
