Life-Long Bath County Resident Dies At Age 74

Shirley Hoover Swearengin, a life-long resident of Bath County, Virginia, completed her journey Monday, June 5, 2017 at her residence, with her son by her side.

She was born May 30, 1943 in Hot Springs, Virginia, the daughter of the late Ollie McManamay.

Shirley was a devoted wife and caregiver to her husband, Harold (Ham) Swearengin, who preceded her in death on January 25, 2004; and a dedicated mother to her son.

She is survived by her son and caregiver, Richard Swearengin of Hot Springs; four sisters: Carol Adkins and husband, Hershel of Hot Springs, Joyce McManamay and friend, George Montgomery of Staunton, Virginia, Diana Botkin and husband, Johnny of Millboro, Virginia and Sue Booth and husband, Tom of Salem; two foster sisters, Delma LaClair of Staunton and Ernie Hoover and husband, Paul of Covington, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Jake Swearengin of Eden, NC; and two sisters-in-law, Montague (Sis) Ryder of Hot Springs and Charlotte Shifflett and husband, Robert of Hot Springs. In addition, she is survived by a special uncle, Paul Hoover and wife, Ernie of Covington; special Aunts, Blanche Hodge of Hot Springs and Ruth Locklear and husband, Garner of Pembroke, NC; a special niece, Debbie McMullen and husband, Glen of Williamsville, Virginia; and several other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, and mother, she is preceded in death by a foster mother, Mabel Layton; foster sisters, Anita McElwee and Jody McMahan; and foster brother, Buddy Layton.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at the Warm Springs Cemetery with Reverend Fred LaSpina.

Memorial gifts may be made to her favorite organizations, please make checks payable to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Intrepid Hospice, Hot Springs Rescue Squad or Warm Springs Cemetery Fund and mail checks to Jeanne Harold, 127 Ashwood Drive, Hot Springs, VA 24445, for distribution. The McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home, Hot Springs, is in charge of arrangements.
