Obituary for William Herbert (Bill) Gurd William Herbert (Bill) Gurd
Korean War Veteran Retired From WestRock's Recovery Department

William Herbert (Bill) Gurd, 83, of 1005 Beverly Street, Covington, Virginia, died Monday, September 11, 2017.

He was born June 30, 1934, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Herbert and Lona Kesner Gurd.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded by his wife, Janet Sharp Gurd, in 2004; a brother, Stephen D. Gurd; two sisters, Marna G. Ross and Wanda M. Binion and a grandson, Matthew William Rodgers.

Mr. Gurd served his country in the United States Navy in the Korean War.

He retired in 1997 from the Recovery Dept. at WestRock after 37 years of service.

He was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mr. Gurd enjoyed working at the Cope Food Pantry that is located at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 4.

Surviving are his three daughters, Deborah Rodgers and her husband, Danny of Covington; Diana Hinton of Yorktown and Linda Bogar and her husband, Clifford of Covington; five grandsons, David and Shannon Rodgers; Adam and Lauren Crawford, Andrew Crawford and Luke and Samantha Crawford, all of Covington; and Justin and Katie Hinton of Talbott, TN; one granddaughter, Amy Starnes of Hampton; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Patsy Martin of Daleville and Ginny Davis of Yorktown; one brother-in-law, Roy Sharp of Sweet Springs, WV; four sisters–in-law, Carolyn Waugh of Clifton Forge; Dee and Kenny Rose of Dover, OH; Nellie Sharp of Ozark , AL and Susan and Ricky Terrell of Covington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday September 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William M. Hartsfield officiating.

Interment will be made in Alleghany Memorial Park with graveside rites being conducted by the Cutis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Pallbearers will be David Rogers, Adam Crawford, Justin Hinton, Andrew Crawford, Gary Whitehead, John Waugh and Doug Waugh.

The family will receive their friends Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorial donations in Mr. Gurd's name be made to Cope Food Pantry, located at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church, 900 N. Alleghany Ave, Covington, VA 24426.
