Obituary for Nellie Floyd Thompson Nellie Floyd Thompson
Rockbridge County Native Dies At Age 87

Nellie Floyd Thompson, 87, of Glasgow, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2017.

Nellie left this world surrounded by family, and when she arrived in heaven she was welcomed by her mother, father, husband, sister, and many other beloved family and friends.

Born on July 29, 1930 in Rockbridge County, Nellie was the daughter of the late Andrew and Macy Floyd.

She was also preceded in death by her dearly-loved sister, Rachel B. Floyd.

She was a loving and supportive wife to Walter Leslie Thompson for 63 years.

Nellie and Walter had many adventures while living in four states, but moved back to Rockbridge County in 1983, where they raised their four children and lived for the rest of their lives. As a full-time homemaker, Nellie spent her days caring for her family, serving in the church, and dreaming of her next trip to the beach. She loved hosting her family for holidays where her homemade biscuits were sure to be on the menu.

Nellie was a cherished mother who will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her immediate family including her daughter, Nancy T. George and husband, Joe, of Madison Heights; her son, Walter L. Thompson Jr. and his wife, Evelyn, of Evergreen; her son, Norman F. Thompson of Lynchburg; and her daughter, Janice B. Smith and her husband, Kenneth, of Madison Heights. Nellie was known as "Nanny" to her 11 adored grandchildren, 24 beloved great-grandchildren, and one precious great-great grandson. Nellie was most proud of her large family, and they will always carry her memory in their hearts.

Nellie was a dedicated servant of the Lord, who was most recently a member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Buena Vista. Her legacy is that she taught those who knew her how to passionately love the Lord and their family. We hope to honor her by living our lives by her example.

A private graveside service will take place at Glasgow Cemetery with Pastor Don Martin officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
