Obituary for Royal Cleaves Johnson II Royal Cleaves Johnson II
Former Rockbridge Resident Was Goshen Scout Reservation Director, Math Teacher At RCHS

Royal Cleaves Johnson II, formerly of Rockbridge County, Virginia, died October 6, 2017 at his family home in Myersville, Maryland.

His two daughters, Beth Johnson Groombridge and Lea B. Johnson, were at his side, as was his wife, Beverly. He was 82.

A Goshen Scout Reservation directorship brought him and his family to this lovely area, and in 1969 he, his wife, Rachel and their two girls purchased a large farm on Walkers Creek. Royal taught mathematics at Rockbridge High School and spent summers at the Scout camp.

Royal's greatest strength lay in the helper mode; although suffering from a familial affliction – bipolar disease – he achieved a specialist in education degree from the University of Virginia and assisted many toward mental stability and freedom from addiction to alcohol. He was proof that "it works if you work it." Keep coming back to us in spirit.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the National Capital Area Council/Boy Scouts of America, 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland, 20814. Phone (301) 530-9360 or online at ncasbsa.org.
