Obituary for Van Buren Noel Van Buren Noel
U.S. Army World War II Veteran Was Westvaco Retiree, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Member

Mr. Van Buren Noel, age 94, of Covington, Virginia, died Friday, October 27, 2017 at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor.

He was the husband of the late Isabelle "Tudy" Eckelkamp Noel, who preceded him in death on April 4, 2003.

Mr. Noel was born May 25, 1923 in Rockbridge County, the son of the late Nathan Van Noel and Lucy Sampson Noel.

He was a lifetime resident of this community. Mr. Noel served his country as a corpsman in the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed in the European Theatre of Operations. A decorated soldier, he received a purple heart for being wounded in combat as well as African and European Theatre ribbons.

Van was retired from the carbon plant of Westvaco with forty-three years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Van was also a member of Dunlap Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Covington Moose Lodge, #610 L.O.O.M. and the Callaghan Ruritan Club.

Mr. Noel is survived by two sons, Jonathan Noel and wife, Pat and Mark Noel and wife, Debbie; three daughters, Daphne (DeDe) Rogowski and husband, Don, Valerie Bruffey and husband, Tom and Mary Ann Morris and husband, Jody; seven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

Mr. Noel was the last surviving member of his family of nine siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Tom Collins officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends attending the service.

Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home. The rosary will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 255 W. Main Street, Covington, VA 24426 or Dunlap Fire and Rescue, P. O. Box 218, Covington, VA 24426.
