Obituary for Elbert Hugh Rexrode Elbert Hugh Rexrode
Monterey High School Graduate Was Korean War Veteran, Surveyor

Elbert Hugh Rexrode, 77, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 15, 1940 in Monterey, a son of late Ira Wilbur and Maggie Jane (Rexrode) Rexrode. On July 3, 1965 he married Eleanore B. Hiner.

Elbert graduated from Monterey High School and served in Korea with the United States Army. In 1982, he attended night school at UVA to earn his land surveyor's license, and served 30 years as a surveyor with the Virginia State Highway Department and City of Waynesboro Engineering Department. He surveyed in Highland County until his retirement in 2009.

He was a lifetime member of Monterey United Methodist Church.

Elbert loved playing golf, ginsenging and hunting mushrooms.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Eva Quist; and four brothers, Thomas, Samuel, Douglas and Robert Rexrode. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanore B. Hiner Rexrode; brother, E. Dale Rexrode of Waynesboro; sister, Louise Rexrode of Monterey and Florida; as well as a great number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Monterey United Methodist Church with pastors Bobbie Jo Gardner and Jenelle Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Obaugh Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be nephews Alan Rexrode, Danny Rexrode, Jim Quist, Michael McCray, Robert Hiner and Stephen Hartman.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial donations be made to Monterey Cemetery, 228 Triple Oaks Lane, Hot Springs, Va. 24445 or to Monterey United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 382, Monterey, Va. 24465.
