Obituary for Lawrence Berton Gwin Lawrence Berton Gwin
World War II Veteran Was Homestead Retiree

Lawrence Berton Gwin, 90, of Hot Springs, Virginia, died Sunday, December 17, 2017 at his residence.

He was born February 20, 1927 in Bath County, Virginia, the son of the late Cecil Berton Gwin and Alice Ryder Gwin.

Mr. Gwin was retired from the Homestead Resort with 17 years of service as a mechanic on the golf course. Prior to that he worked for Simpson Garage.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II.

Mr. Gwin attended Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed playing golf and hunting for golf balls along the highway. He loved fishing and resting beside the ocean. He liked to gather cans and metal around the community. He loved his cats.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Juanita Harouff Gwin of Hot Springs; three daughters, Donna Sue Gwin Foster and husband, Wayne of Richmond, Virginia, Linda Gail Gwin of Hot Springs, Jeanie Marie Gwin Dressler and husband, Jeff of Falling Springs, Virginia; six grandchildren, John Foster, Jr., Shawn Foster, Cory Gwin, Jeffrey Dressler, Jr., Jonathan Dressler and Lori Beth Davis; four great grandchildren; two brothers, James Gwin and Arnold Gwin, both of Hot Springs; a sister; Mildred Phillips of Baltimore, Maryland; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Simmons.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 21, 2017 at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Woodzell, Jackie Green, Johnny Kershner, Bart Ailstock, Bobby Bogan, Jody Campbell, Kenny Gwin and Jamie Gwin. The family will receive friends 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.
