John Donald (Bud) Russell, born March 1, 1931 in Quincy, Massachusetts, died peacefully at his home in Rockbridge County on December 25, 2017.

Son of J. Donald Russell and Helen D. Proude Russell, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert A. Russell.

He is survived by his companion and wife of 37 years, Margaret M. (Peggy) Russell; his children, Christopher M. Russell and Devon O. Russell; and his sister, Janet Russell Sullivan.

He was always especially appreciative of the early education received at Montclair Elementary and North Quincy High School. He spent two years in the army during the Korean War and subsequently earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas.

Over the next 20 years he worked in all facets of human resources, serving at such national companies as Genesco and Vitro Laboratories. He then joined Citi Bank and City Investing Company, from which he retired as senior vice president of human resources.

A few years after retiring, Bud and Peggy moved to Virginia. They did a considerable amount of traveling in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, until the onset of his illness. Bud loved Ireland and since his wife was a natural citizen of both the U.S. and Ireland, he was entitled to apply for post-nuptial Irish citizenship. He did and became a dual citizen in 2005.

Bud was a man filled with knowledge, kindness and goodness. He possessed a great sense of humor and a gentle caring heart. He will be missed forever by those of us who loved him.

There will be no formal services. Bud's ashes and eventually Peggy's will be joined and scattered in Inistioge, Ireland, a place they both loved.
