U. S. Air Force Veteran Was Houff Truck Driver

Luther Reeves Saunders, 86, of Lexington, Virginia, died Friday, January 5, 2018 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 2, 1931, in Waynesville, N.C., he was a son of the late Sam C. Saunders and Bertha Smith Saunders.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Winfred Saunders, and a great-grandchild, Briley Sensabaugh.

Luther was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and retired as a truck driver for Houff Trucking.

He was a hard-working family man who retired at the age of 83. He was generous and kind and would always help anyone in need. He loved get-togethers with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, and gospel, bluegrass, and country music.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Ewing Saunders; children, Curtis Saunders and wife, Elaine of Indian Trail, N.C., Mary Ruth Saunders of Santa Monica, Calif., Charles Saunders and partner, Brian O'Malley of Charlotte, N.C., and Rebecca Leitch and husband, William, Sherry Miller and husband, Ronnie, all of Lexington; sister, Dorothy Rhinehart of Englewood, Fla.; five grandchildren, Sara Sensabaugh, Jeff Conner, Emily Thomas, Reba Miller and Payton Miller; one great-grandchild, Icelynn Sensabaugh; nephews, Roger Rhinehart and Wayne Rhinehart; sister-in-laws, Mary Jane Barrett and husband, Paul, and Janet Ewing; and numerous step-nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Manly Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Wilkins officiating. There will be a gathering in the social hall following the service. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
