Obituary for Virginia Pittman Sikes Virginia Pittman Sikes
Retired Lexington Attorney Was North Carolina Native

Virginia Pittman Sikes, 68, of Lexington, Virginia died Saturday morning, January 13, 2018.

Virginia was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Pittman of Rockingham, N.C., and the wife of William A. Sikes, who was born in Albermarle, N.C.

Jennie graduated from Rockingham High School in 1967, and attended U.N.C. Chapel Hill, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1971. Bill and Jennie were married on January 21, 1972 and the couple moved to Cambridge, Mass., where Bill was a student at Harvard Divinity School.

Jennie obtained an master of education from U.N.C. before deciding on a law career. She attended Columbia School of Law, where she was a Stone Scholar, editor-in-chief of The Journal Of Law and Social Problems, and winner of the E. B. Convers Prize for the best original essay on a legal subject. In the years following graduation, Jennie co-chaired the reunion committee for her class.

After law school, Jennie clerked for the Hon. Max Rosenn, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She and Bill then moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where Jennie became a partner in the law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker, & Rhoads. Jennie served many years on the management committee of Montgomery, McCracken. She was the first woman ever to be named managing partner of the firm.

Jennie taught law courses at several Philadelphia area colleges. She was also very active in charitable organizations and arts groups, serving a term as president of both The Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and the Philadelphia Cultural Alliance.

Jennie and Bill retired to Lexington in 2014.

In addition to her husband, Jennie is survived by her brothers and sisters: John L. Pittman (Lucinda); Betty Pittman Parr (Dewey); Jane Pittman Modla (Jake); Carol Pittman Latimer (Harrison); Ira B. Pittman (Tina); Irene Pittman Aiken (Kevin). The family will receive friends at 204 Jackson Ave. between 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. William Klein at Lexington Presbyterian Church, 120 S. Main St., 2 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018. The funeral will be followed by a brief committal ceremony at Oxford Presbyterian Church.
