Covington Native Was Basketball Star & Coach

Rhoda Virginia Twitty Lewis, 53, of Richmond, Virginia, died Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Springs Nursing Home in Bath County.

She was born December 8, 1964, in Covington, a daughter of the late Charles E. Twitty, Sr. and Mary Graves Twitty.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Lewis in 2017.

Rhoda attended the public city schools in Covington, graduating from Covington High School in 1983. While in school she was a phenomenal basketball player. She surpassed both the girls' and boys' records with 1,535 points, which held firm for 30 years before another female basketball player broke the record.

She graduated in 1988 from Saint Paul College in Lawrenceville, VA, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. While attending Saint Paul College, Rhoda played on the women's basketball team scoring 1000 points. In May of 2016 Rhoda received her Master’s Degree in Psychology from North Central University.

Upon graduation from college, Rhoda was employed by the City of Covington Police Department and was a girls' basketball coach at Covington High School. Later she moved and was head girls' basketball coach at Saint Paul College in Lawrenceville. While in Richmond, Rhoda was the director at the Boys' and Girls' Club; was an adult disability counselor at the "Village"; an employee at George Washington Carver Elementary School and coach for the Special Olympics Parks and Recreations.

She was a founding member of the Christian Community Center in Richmond, where she faithfully served as a trustee and deaconess. Whenever she visited Covington she attended the Concerned Christian Baptist Church. Pastors Julius and Karen White, as well as William O. Hickman, were instrumental in her spiritual growth.

Rhoda is survived by her daughter, Jalen Yvette Lewis of Richmond; brothers and sisters, Priscilla and Curtis Stewart; Diane Twitty; Charles E. Twitty, Jr.; Linwood Twitty; Steven and Elizabeth Twitty and Gary Wayne and Gay Lynn Twitty, all of Covington; Derelene Twitty and her fiance, Paul of Clifton Forge; Thomas Twitty of Ashburn and William and Winifred Twitty of Richmond; three godchildren, Jawann Jeter, Janae Morris White and Lesha White, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 12:00 noon in Curfman Hall Auditorium at Covington High School with the Rev. Marvin Green officiating, assisted by the Rev. Julius White, Rev. William O. Hickman and Rev. Matthew T. Barnette.

The family will receive friends for one hour before service time at Covington High School.

In keeping with her wishes, her body will be cremated following the service.
