Obituary for Guy Chittum (Johnie) Nicely Jr. Guy Chittum (Johnie) Nicely Jr.
Decorated World War II Veteran Was Rockbridge County Native

Guy Chittum (Johnie) Nicely Jr., age 94, of Rockbridge County, Virginia went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

Born May 10, 1923, in the North Buffalo area of Rockbridge County, he was the oldest son of the late Guy C. Nicely Sr. and Hattie Agnor Nicely. Also preceding him in death was his wife of 63 years, Bertha Plogger "Bootsie" Nicely; infant son, Larry Chittum Nicely; and three sisters, Dorothy McKenna, Louise Markham and Ruth Bullock.

Johnie was a charter member of Collierstown Baptist Church, where he was very active in many capacities throughout the years, including trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Guy retired from Burlington Industries as a supervisor in the tufted department, after 43 years of service.

Mr. Nicely was a veteran of World War II, serving his country for 33 months as platoon sergeant in an infantry rifle company. He was responsible for tactical employment and welfare of 43 enlisted men, participating in six major campaigns including Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. For his service, he was awarded several medals, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Surviving are his son, Wayne H. Nicely and wife, Lana; three brothers, Paul W. Nicely Sr. and wife, Tiny, Kenton L. Nicely, and Ovie E. Nicely and wife, Betty; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to caregivers Sandra Fix, Jerrah McKemy, Lisa Black, Tina Hall and many others who lent a helping-hand over the last five years.

A celebration of his home going will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at the Collierstown Baptist Church by Pastor Jesse Krystowiak. The committal service will follow at Oxford Presbyterian Church Cemetery with military rites.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 23 at the Harrison Funeral Home.
