Obituary for Joseph Whalen, Jr. Joseph Whalen, Jr.
Korean War Marine Corps Veteran Dies At Age 87

Joseph Whalen, Jr., 87, of 97 Vine Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, died Friday, February 2, 2018 at his residence.

He was born on December 11, 1930 in West Grove, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Joseph Whalen, Sr. and Ann Ebright Whalen.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clifton Forge.

He volunteered for many years at the Clifton Forge Food Pantry and enjoyed doing odd jobs and helping everyone in the community.

He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, 1st Division, serving in Korea, and a survivor of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir - 27 November - 13 December 1950.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Connie Whalen; two daughters, Jacki White and husband, Stephen of Annandale, Amy Cathcart and husband, Rik of Bristow; four grandchildren, Thomas White, Mary Shingler, Abby Shingler, Joseph White; several nieces and nephews, and all of his Wesgate friends and neighbors.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 17, 2018 in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home in Clifton Forge with Fr. Tom Collins officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Mt Carmel Cemetery in Low Moor. Abby Shingler will serve as the urn bearer. Graveside military honors will be provided by members of the Virginia Patriot Guard and the Virginia Marine Corps League.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 16, 2018 at Nicely Funeral Home.

His family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to Mountain Regional Hospice Volunteers, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422
