Longtime Seventh Grade English Teacher Dies At Age 91

Betty Booth Hawes, 91, of Buena Vista, Virginia passed from this life into the next on February 7, 2018.

Born and reared in Fincastle, she was the daughter of the late Mattie Nofsinger Booth and Paul Dungan Booth.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, the late Rev. A.J. Hawes; by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and E.C. Westerman, and by her son-in-law, John Christian.

Betty is survived by her children, Joseph H. Hawes and wife, Diana of Natural Bridge; Dean Hawes and wife, Debbie of Charlotte, N.C., Annette Christian of Richmond, Martha Gravatt and husband, Ron of Buena Vista, and Susan Yanosick and husband, Gary of New Market, MD. Her grandchildren include Kristen Hawes, Zach Hawes, Martha Christian, Joseph F. Hawes, Sarah Smith and husband, Marshall, Kathryn Baker and husband, Matt, and Susan Gravatt. Her great-grandchildren include Annalise Smith, Raylan Smith and Kash Hawes.

Betty's life was a life well-lived. She was at once a Christian lady, a minister's wife, a mother of five, and an active member of her church. For 22 years she taught seventh-grade English, where she was revered and respected by a generation of students in Buena Vista. To all who were privileged to know her, whether in public or in private, she leaves a legacy of love and service.

Burial will be private. Visitation will be held at Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2018. The Memorial Service will be held at the Buena Vista Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, by the Rev. Bryon LePere officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Buena Vista Baptist Church, 2174 Chestnut Avenue, Buena Vista, VA 24416. Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
