Well-Known Regional Anglican Priest Dies In Amherst

The Rev. William Charles Crites of Amherst, Virginia, formerly of Buena Vista, went to be with his Lord Jesus on Friday, February 2, 2018.

He was born in Dayton, Ohio, to Emerson Harold Crites and Arabelle Freeman Crites.

He is survived by three sons, Michael and wife, Germaine, Jim and wife, Becky, and David; and one daughter, Eileen Nicholson and husband, Chris. He had five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois in 2014; four sisters, Mary Grilliot, Carol Freeman, Ann Hollingsworth and Gail Schlater; and one brother, Robert Crites.

While serving in the U. S. Army at Ft. McNair in Washington D.C., he met his future wife, Lois Eileen McCue, who was an Army Special Services librarian.

After his Army service, he completed pharmacy school at the Medical College of Virginia, and was a pharmacist for many years.

With a clear calling from God, he completed seminary in 1982, and with his wife, Lois started St. Paul's Anglican Church in Lexington.

In addition to Lexington, he faithfully served congregations in Clifton Forge, Blacksburg, Charlottesville, and Amherst. He was Priest in Charge for Church of the Epiphany Anglican in Amherst at the time of his death.

He was a cherished husband and father, and joyfully lived his life in Christian service and as a witness to all around him. He is now jubilantly reunited in heaven with Lois, his treasured wife of more than 61 years. His abundant love for his wife and family was evident at every gathering and will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and so many more, whose lives he touched in a profound way.

A memorial Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 1 p.m., at Clifford Baptist Church, 635 Fletchers Level Road, Amherst VA 24521, with a reception immediately following. The Rt. Rev. William McClean, Jr. will officiate. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to your local hospice.
