Obituary for Ruth Putnam Altizer Ruth Putnam Altizer
Westvaco Retiree Was McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church Member

Ruth Putnam Altizer, of 2111 Evergreen Road, Covington, Virginia died at the Brian Center in Low Moor on March 9, 2018.

She was born October 16, 1936 in Covington, VA.

She was the wife of the late Garland H. Altizer for 57 years. He preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles L. and Mamie Hocker Putnam, and her brother, Charles L. Putnam, Jr.

She retired from Westvaco in 1995 after 36 years. She was a member of McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She graduated from Covington High School in 1954, with a great number of graduates, who remained her closest and dearest friends after many years, especially Robbie Warlitner.

She was a special loving "Gramie", who loved her grands and great grands. Her favorite hobbie was collecting special dollar bills, and birthday year coins from them. She enjoyed going to her daughter's dance studio, "Garlynda’s Fancy Feet" in Clifton Forge, and attending dance recitals.

She is survived by a daughter, Garlynda Altizer Haynes and husband, Grady of Clifton Forge; a son, Timothy Hayes Altizer and wife, Brenda of Millboro; four grandchildren, Gavin Haynes and wife, Erin of Clifton Forge, Giaynna Haynes Smith and husband, Brett of Clifton Forge, Damin Altizer and wife, Kelly of Charlottesville and Cody Altizer of Millboro; three great grandchildren, Grayson Smith of Covington, Kate Altizer of Charlottesville, and Gates Haynes of Clifton Forge; a brother-in-law, Walter "Doc" Altizer and wife, Sarah of Martinsville; and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church.

The interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Young and Joe Wimer.

The family will receive their friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Garlynda Haynes at 1602 Jefferson Ave., Clifton Forge, VA 24422.

The family ask that memorial gifts be made to the COPE at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church at 900 Alleghany Ave., Covington, VA 24426.
