Obituary for Wilmer Stratton Wilmer Stratton
Professor Of Chemistry, Environmental Science Dies At Age 85

Wilmer Stratton, a resident at Kendal at Lexington, Virginia died March 14, 2018.

Born in Newark, N.J., he grew up in West Orange, N.J. He was a birthright member of Montclair Friends Meeting (Quaker).

Wil was an Eagle Scout and an active member of Young Friends in his youth. He attended Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio.

Following graduation from Earlham College, he entered Ohio State University and received a doctorate in chemistry in 1958.

He was married to Becky Henderson from 1955 to 1982. They had three children: Don (a biologist at the University of Vermont), Larry (a physician in Boston), and Roger (music director at a large Catholic church near St. Paul, Minn.).

Wil Stratton was a professor of chemistry and environmental science at Earlham College from 1959 until his retirement in 1997. Over the course of his professional career, he collaborated with environmental scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tenn.) focusing on mercury in the atmosphere. He was one of the authors of an innovative chemistry textbook, "Chemistry in Context, Applying Chemistry to Society."

In 1989 he married Mary James Chenoweth, a college classmate (Earlham '54). Together, they enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, music, and participating in local and regional Quaker activities. After retirement they spent 10 years in Floyd, a small mountain community in Southwest Virginia, and later moved into the Kendal retirement community in Lexington. In his final years at Kendal, he was active in various programs and was able to pursue two of his favorite hobbies: woodworking and photography.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two siblings, three children, three stepchildren, seven grandchildren, and six step-grandchildren.

He was 85 years old.
