Obituary for Uvon Chittum Lawhorne Uvon Chittum Lawhorne
91 Year-Old Was Longtime Buena Vista Resident

Uvon Chittum Lawhorne, 91, of Buena Vista, Virginia passed gently in her sleep at the home of her daughter in Staunton on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.

A lifelong resident of Buena Vista, Uvon joyfully resided in the beautiful hillside home she and her husband designed in 1949.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Scott Chittum and Rebecca Wiseman Chittum; one brother, Donald Lyle Chittum; her husband, James Howard Lawhorne; and their beloved son, Darby James Lawhorne.

She leaves behind her devoted daughter, Sheba Lawhorne Lane and son-in-law ,F. Douglas Lane. She will also be missed by her four dearly loved grandchildren: Meredith Lawhorne, Alyssa Lawhorne, Maria Lane and Connor Lane.

Through her lifelong membership at the Stone Church of the Brethren, Uvon learned and demonstrated humble, benevolent, faithful Christian living. From her birth on April 30, 1926, her parents instilled in her a commitment to dedicated church attendance. She was baptized at the Stone Church as a child, then married there to her one true love on February 25, 1949. Uvon served many years as a children's Sunday school teacher and youth leader. She remained a devoted member of the Adult Fellowship Class, serving in leadership roles and giving generously to local needs as she practiced her personal motto that "mission begins at home."

Many treasured friends, neighbors, and extended family members share in the loss of her beautiful smile, humor, and wisdom. Her positive outlook on life and the joy she found in giving to others will be greatly missed. Her great-granddog, Maisie, who provided comfort and laughter through the special bond they shared, will also feel the loss brought by her passing but will remember with joy the times spent watching the deer and playing on the hillside at "Nana's house".

Her legacy of faith, gratitude, and assurance of God's blessings, here and ever-after, will live on through all who were touched by her beautiful life.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home in Buena Vista. Visitation will be held in the hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest in Green Hill Cemetery, amid the beautiful, snow-covered Blue Ridge Mountains, overlooking the city where her entire life was well-lived.

Arrangements are by Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Home.
