Obituary for Kathleen Swan Rogers Kathleen Swan Rogers
Former Mayflower Administrator Also Served As Fraternity House Director

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Kathleen Swan Rogers, 86, known as Mama, Rogers and GeeGee, passed away on March 21, 2018, at her home in Lexington, Virginia.

She was born Aug. 7, 1931, to Felix Maddox Swan and Kathleen Cox Swan at Brandy Station. She graduated from Culpeper High School in 1948 and from the Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She was a fixture for many years in Culpeper working in the nursing field for Drs. J. Bernard Jones and P. Declan Burke. She later moved to Lexington to be near her daughter.

Before her final retirement, she was the administrator of The Mayflower, a retirement and long-term care facility, followed by serving as house director for the Washington and Lee fraternities Phi Kappa Psi and Kappa Sigma.

Because her wonderful and caring nature could not be contained to just her immediate family, in each of these roles, she took on the responsibility of matriarch, where she was an extremely positive influence on her extended families, both old and young.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents and a brother, Haliburton "Bernie" Swan III.

She is survived by a brother, Alex Swan (Janet); her son, James "Jim" Rogers (Linda) of Yorktown; her daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" Nicely(Allen) of Lexington; grandchildren, Dawn Shackelford (James) of Gloucester; Shannon Rugh (Dan) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Jamey Nicely (Katelyn) of Lexington; and Kathleen Ruffner (Ed) of Vienna; as well as six great-grandchildren: Ryan Shackelford, Austin Shackelford, Amelia Rugh, Eden Rugh, Coleman Nicely and Carter Ruffner.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Culpeper/Brandy Station.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Kathleen’s name to the Rockbridge Area Hospice in recognition of the excellent care provided by her hospice team.

Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory.
