Retired Alleghany County School Custodian Dies At Age 90

Johnie Harold Carter, 90, of 4212 Dunlap Creek Road, Covington, Virginia died Saturday, March 24, 2018 at his residence.

He was born August 3, 1927 in Boomer, WV, the son of the late Simon and Mina Martin Carter.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Carter.

Mr. Carter retired from Alleghany County School System after working as a custodian at Callaghan Elementary School.

He was member of Palestine Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Dunlap Fire Department and Rescue, a member of the Moonshine Express Band, he was caller for square dancing and enjoyed polka dancing.

Johnie was avid farmer and gardening and loved his family.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Mary K. Carter; two daughters, Lois Hayslett and her husband, John of Covington; Kathy Scruggs and her husband, Keith of White Sulphur Springs, WV and a son, Andy Carter and his wife, Kim of Covington; six grandchildren: Jeremy Carey of Lyndhurst, Erin Carter of Covington, Tonya Fowler of Hillsdale, WV, Taylor Carter and his wife, Taylor, Zac Carter, and Seth Carter, all of Covington; two great grandchildren, Amelia Fowler of Hillsdale, WV and Reagan Carter of Covington; a number of nieces and nephews and a special friends, Bobby Hepler and wife, Bonnie.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.

Interment will be made in the Carter Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Carter's name to the Dunlap Fire Department and Rescue at 4115 Midland Trail, Covington, VA 24426.
